The Meat Hygiene Service (MHS) was established on 1 April 1995, taking over meat inspection duties in fresh meat premises from some 300 local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales. It is the role of MHS to help ensure that the meat industry safeguards the health of the public, and the health and welfare of animals at slaughter. As of 1 April 2010 the Meat Hygiene Service (MHS) and Food Standards Agency merged to become the Food Standards Agency.

The Challenge
Some 4 years ago, Business Objects Enterprise was implemented as a part of an initiative to provide managers, inspectors and operatives with detailed and accurate information about the various slaughterhouses and fresh meat premises in various regions across the country. Crystal Reports was also implemented in order to allow customised reports, based upon the requirements of various groups, to be generated. Unfortunately, they had not fully appreciated the complexity of managing and maintaining its disparate data repositories and in allowing reports to be generated from information held in different departmental folders. Access to information held in the various departmental silos was restricted, as were the reports generated by each individual department, resulting in duplicate reports being generated.
